Germany keeper Lehmann quits international stage
BERLIN, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Jens Lehmann brought the curtain down on his international career on Friday, giving Germany coach Joachim Loew time to blood a new goalkeeper before the 2010 World Cup.
The 38-year-old keeper, who won 61 caps, held talks with Loew before making his decision, the German Soccer Federation (DFB) said in a statement on its website (www.dfb.de).
“I could no longer give the coach a guarantee I would still be playing football after my one-year contract with VfB Stuttgart expires,” Lehmann was quoted as saying.
“I therefore suggested to him and to (goalkeeping coach) Andreas Koepke they no longer include me in their plans.”
Lehmann, who left Arsenal for Stuttgart at the end of last season, made his debut for Germany against Oman in February 1998.
His last appearance came when Germany lost 1-0 to Spain in the final of Euro 2008 in Vienna in June.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Rene Adler, 23, has been tipped by local media to take over in goal when Germany meet Belgium in a friendly in Nuremberg on Aug. 20.
Former Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann made Lehmann his number one for the 2006 World Cup, relegating Bayern Munich’s Oliver Kahn to the bench.
“Our success at the 2006 World Cup will always be closely associated with (Lehmann) but he also made an equally big contribution to our success at Euro 2008,” Loew said.
“He has done much for German soccer and was always an important discussion partner for me.”
